Ice Skating Birthday Party Details

That’s what Valerie, who had such a party said about planning/styling it:

“My sweet girl, Reese, was turning SIX and since her birthday is in the heart of the winter (in snowy Chicago) we decided upon a precious and girly ice skating theme. I enlisted the graphic design assistance of my talented friend, Beth Kruse Custom Creations, to create uniquely sweet and somewhat vintage feeling printables.
We sent invitations welcoming the group of little ladies over to our house for lunch, games and dessert and then asked for parents to pick up their kids and join us for a trip to the ice skating rink.
As girls entered our house, they were greeted by the custom ice cake piñata that was hung from our second floor railing. It coordinated perfectly with our girly vibe and provided some active FUN later in our party.

We had the girls eat in our dining room and added an extra element of fun within that room by creating a “MILK BAR” complete with chocolate milk, vanilla milk and chocolate milk kept cold in REAL SNOW; certainly one of the perks of living in Chicago in the winter. Each place setting at our dining table was appointed with a sweet birthday hat for each girl to wear while having lunch, a fun party cup and straw and a dedicated place setting to avoid any seating squabbles.
Food was kept simple and kid-friendly – buttered noodles, chicken tenders, fruit cups and carrots and dip cups. The Moms (there were a few of us) delivered the food to the kids to keep the flow moving and while allowing the girls to stay seated.

Our desserts were pretty fabulous. Our cake featured a small fondant set of ice skates and was surrounded by sparkly silver pom poms. Ice skate cake pops were arranged on mirrors to mimic ice. Mitten cake pops were served atop a blanket of “snow”. Amazing boutique cookies by the always impeccable NatSweets were like little pieces of edible art.
For activities, we created an Ice Skating backdrop poster that included two different colored snowflakes. We separated the girls into two teams and made a relay race of sorts. Each girl was instructed to carry cotton balls on a spoon up to their designated color of snowflake until all of the snowflakes were covered in cotton balls. It was fun!
Next up, we made ice skate templates and attached to a hard canvas and let the girls “bling out” their skates with pom poms, rhinestones and markers. We let the glue dry for the rest of the party and the girls got to take these home with them later.

Our last activity was the piñata, which as we know…is always a crowd pleaser.

Upon leaving, each girl was given a personalized scarf, hat and mittens to wear while we ice skated later. The girls were over the moon excited to all be matching. It was pretty precious.
It was a FABULOUS party and just a GREAT way to ring in the precious age of SIX!”

What to Look for in a Venue for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

Selecting the perfect party venues for an ice skating birthday party is all about finding a place that combines fun, safety, and convenience. First, you'll want to ensure the rink is well-maintained with smooth ice and adequate safety measures like railings and padding. Check if they provide skate rentals in various sizes, especially if not all guests own skates. Look for a space with a separate party area to set up food, cake, and presents. Accessibility is vital, too — it should be easy for guests to find and have ample parking. Bonus points if the venue offers party packages with options for lessons or games on ice!

Details for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

Start by sending out party invitations shaped like ice skates or featuring a frosty winter theme. On the day, warm up your guests with a hot cocoa station with marshmallows and whipped cream. Consider hiring an instructor for a mini-lesson — it's a great icebreaker and ensures everyone feels confident on the rink. Set up a cozy area with blankets and cushions for those who want a break from skating. For food, consider comfort bites like pretzels, pizza, and cupcakes with icing that mimic an icy surface. Include fun extras like a photo booth with snowy props.

Food and Drinks for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

Begin by warming guests up with a “Hot Cocoa Bar,” with mini marshmallows, whipped cream, and sprinkles. Consider comfort foods like mini pretzels, sliders, or pizza bites for snacks. How about “Snowflake Sandwiches” cut into fun shapes? Serve a cake decorated to look like an icy rink with edible skate figures! For a special touch, serve “Frosty Blue Mocktails” — a mix of blue raspberry and lemonade. And for party favors, “Skater Snack Bags” filled with themed treats like snowball cookies or chocolate-covered pretzels. These delights are sure to keep your skaters fueled and happy!

Budget for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

Choose a local public rink to save on venue costs. Many rinks offer affordable party packages that include ice time and skate rentals. Skip pricey decorations and opt for DIY décor using items like balloons, streamers, and homemade snowflakes. Make your invitations and thank-you cards for a personal touch. For food, consider a potluck-style party where everyone brings a dish. Bake your cake or cupcakes with a fun winter theme. Remember, it's not about how much you spend but the fun and memories you create that make the party unique!

Party Decorations for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

Transform your space into a breathtaking winter wonderland that will leave your guests in awe! Choose a color scheme of icy blues, whites, and silvers. Hang snowflake-shaped decorations and shimmering streamers from the ceiling. Use white tablecloths sprinkled with glitter to mimic a sparkling ice rink. Balloons in frosty hues make for great accents. Consider a DIY photo booth with props like faux fur hats, scarves, and cardboard ice skates. For a centerpiece, how about a “skate bouquet” using real or paper skates filled with winter flowers? For the table settings, use snowflake placemats and napkins.

Photoshoot Ideas for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

The photo shoot is the next step of your frosty celebration! Start by setting up a themed photo booth with props like ice skates, snowflake cutouts, and faux fur coats. Use a glittery backdrop to mimic a sparkling ice rink. How about action shots of the birthday star and their friends showing off their skating skills? Include candid moments like laughter-filled falls or sipping hot cocoa. Capture the joyous group singing “Happy Birthday” around the cake. Create fun poses using balloons and party hats. These precious memories, frozen in time, will bring warmth and smiles when you look back on this icy adventure. Say “freeze,” and let the photo fun begin!

Games and Activities for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

Kick things off with an ice breaker — a fun “learn to skate” session where everyone can polish their skills. Then, introduce playful games like “Freeze Skate,” where skaters must freeze when the music stops, or “Skate and Seek,” a chilly twist on Hide and Seek. For non-skaters, set up a cozy corner with winter-themed coloring pages or a snowflake craft station. Schedule the classic “Pin the Tail,” but with a twist — “Pin the Blade on the Skate!” End the day with a group skate under twinkling fairy lights.

Party Invitations for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

Create a chilly color palette of blues, whites, and silvers. For a fun twist, shape your invitations like ice skates or snowflakes. Include all the frosty details — date, time, location (and mention it's an ice rink!), and even a cute reminder for guests to bring their mittens. Add a sprinkle of glitter inside the envelope for a magical touch. For a modern spin, consider digital invites with animated snowfall effects. These festive invitations will build anticipation and ensure your guests can't wait to glide into the birthday fun!

Cake Ideas for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

Consider a cake shaped like an ice skate, complete with edible laces. Or how about a cake resembling a frosty ice rink with miniature skater figurines? Go for a simple yet stunning white cake adorned with silver snowflakes or icy blue frosting swirls. Include the sparkle — edible glitter can create a magical snowy effect for your party desserts. If you're feeling adventurous, a multi-tiered cake with each layer representing a different winter theme could be a showstopper.

Outdoor Party Ideas for an Ice Skating Birthday Party

Imagine this: a delightful outdoor rink — rent one, or if weather permits, build your very own icy oasis. Adorn the area with twinkling lights for that magical glow and festive banners to add a pop of color. Set up a cozy hot cocoa station with all the toppings to keep guests warm. How about a friendly snow sculpture competition or a designated area for a playful snowball showdown? Serve hearty comfort food like hot soup and fresh bread rolls. This outdoor ice skating party will be a frosty, fun-filled experience no guest will ever forget!
